Charles Wolle is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. Wolle is a judge serving on senior status. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
Early life and education
Wolle graduated from Harvard College with his bachelor's degree in 1959 and from the University of Iowa College of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1961. Wolle served and enlisted in the US Army Reserve as a Sergeant from 1961 to 1967 in the height of the Vietnam Conflict.
After law school, Wolle started out as a Private practice attorney in Iowa from 1961 to 1980. In 1981, Wolle was appointed by the Iowa Judicial Nominating Commission as a Judge in the Iowa Third District Circuit Court from 1981 to 1983 before being appointed by the Iowa Judicial Nominating Commission as a Justice in the Iowa Supreme Court from 1983 to 1987. Wolle has served as a faculty member at the National Judicial College in Reno, NV from 1983 to present.
Southern District of Iowa
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, Wolle was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 1, 1987 to a seat vacated by William Stuart as Stuart went on senior status. Wolle was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 5, 1987 and received commission on August 6, 1987. Wolle served as chief judge of the Southern District of Iowa from 1992 to 2001 before assuming senior status on October 16, 2001.
