Christopher Klein is the Chief Judge for the United States bankruptcy court, Eastern District of California. He was appointed in 1988, and reappointed to a 14-year term in 2002. He was elevated to the role of chief judge on October 1, 2008.[1]


Klein earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Brown University, and a Juris Doctor as well as an MBA from the University of Chicago.[2]


Prior to joining the court, Klein served for 10 years as an artillery officer and a judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then took a position as a trial attorney with the Department of Justice, later transitioning to private practice at the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. From there, Klein took up employment as Deputy General Counsel of Litigation at the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.

During his tenure on the bench, Klein was appointed to the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Ninth Circuit for a period of 10 years.[1]
