The Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the state.[2]

Rhode Island Superior Court

The Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction. It has jurisdiction in all felony cases and civil cases regarding amounts over $10,000. There are three divisions within this level of court: the Business Calendar, the Adult Drug Court, and the Gun Court.[2]

Rhode Island District Court

The District Court tries criminal misdemeanor cases and civil cases regarding amounts of up to $10,000. There are no jury trials in the District Court.[2]

Rhode Island Family Court

The Family Court has jurisdiction over domestic relations issues involving children. It includes the specialized Juvenile Drug Court, Truancy Court and Domestic Violence Court.[2]

Rhode Island Workers' Compensation Court

The Workers' Compensation Court has jurisdiction over all workers' compensation matters.[2]

Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal

The Traffic Tribunal which hears traffic cases and keeps records of driving accidents and violations.[2]

Federal courts

There are two federal courts in Rhode Island: the District of Rhode Island and the District of Rhode Island Bankruptcy Court.[3]

Appeals go to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals.
