The Courts in South Dakota include the state court system and two federal courts.
The Circuit Courts are divided into seven judicial circuits. They are the courts of general jurisdiction in the state. 
Courts of limited jurisdiction
The Magistrate Courts assist the circuit courts in processing minor cases and actions such as setting bail, performing marriages, issuing warrants, hearing small claims actions, etc. They are made up of lay magistrates and magistrate judges. These courts may also conduct preliminary hearings and try civil cases regarding amounts less than $10,000.
Appeals go to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.
