Jack Shanstrom is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Montana. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Shanstrom is serving on senior status.
Early life and education
Shanstrom graduated from the University of Montana with two bachelor's Degrees in 1956 and 1957 and with a J.D. in 1957. Shanstrom also served as a U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant in the JAG Corps from 1957 to 1960.
From 1960 to 1964 Shanstrom began his career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Montana from 1960 to 1964. In addition to his private practice, Shanstronm also served as a part-time Assistant city attorney for the City of Livingston, MT in 1960. Shanstrom also served as a part-time County Attorney for Park County from 1960 to 1965. Shanstrom before he became a federal judge became a District court judge for Park County from 1965 to 1982.

Shanstrom first began his career as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Montana as Shanstrom was appointed to a full eight year term in 1983. Shanstrom served in his role until he was elevated to the ranks of the federal judiciary in 1990.
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Conrad Burns, Shanstrom was nominated by President George Bush on February 23, 1990 to a seat vacated by James Battin as Battin assumed senior status. Shanstrom was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 11, 1990 on Unanimous Consent and received commission on May 14, 1990. Shanstrom served as the chief judge of the court from 1996 to 2001 before later assuming senior status on January 30, 2001. Shanstrom was succeeded in this position by Richard Cebull.
