Ross received his undergraduate degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983 and his law degree from Samford University - Cumberland School of Law in 1987.
Ross began his career in 1987 as an associate attorney at the firm of Lackey & Ross, Attorneys at Law. He became a partner of that firm in 1990. He also became a Wayne County Attorney that year, a position he held until 2000. He worked briefly as a sole practitioner from 1994 to 1995 then, from 1995 to 1997, he was a partner of Gray & Ross. After that, he became a sole practitioner again. He continues to practice in that capacity.
Ross has been serving as a judge part-time since 1998, when was elected to the General Sessions and Juvenile Courts. He also joined the Clifton City Court that year, where he continues to serve. He has also served as judge for the City of Collinwood since 2000.
