John Conway is a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Conway is a judge serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Missouri, Conway graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD with his bachelor's degree in 1956 and graduated from the Washburn University School of Law with his law degree in 1963. From 1956 to 1960, Conway served in the US Navy as part of a post graduation active duty service commitment upon graduation from the Naval Academy, and also served in the Navy Reserve from 1960 to 1970.
Conway spent the majority of his pre-judicial legal career as a practing attorney in the State of New Mexico from 1963 to 1986. Also, Conway was an elected official in the State of New Mexico as a member of the New Mexico State Senate from 1970 to 1980. Conway was majority leader of the State Senate from 1972 to 1980. Also, Conway was a City Attorney for Almogordo, NM from 1966 to 1972 on a part-time basis.

Conway was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 14, 1986 to a seat vacated by Bobby Ray Baldock as Baldock went on senior status. Conway was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 13, 1986 on as Senate vote and received commission on June 16, 1986. Conway had the honors as chief judge of the court from 1994 to 2000 before later assuming senior status on September 1, 2000. Conway was succeeded in this position by William P. Johnson.
