Fernandez received an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1964, going on to receive his J.D. from Loyola University Law School - New Orleans in 1967.
Prior to his judicial election in 2001, Fernandez worked for 34 years as an attorney. He was also a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives (District 104) from 1976 to 1988. After that, he spent two years as an assistant chief of staff for the governor's office.
