J. Owen Forrester is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Forrester is a judge serving on senior status.

Early life and education

A native Georgian, Forrester graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with his bachelor's degree in 1961 and later graduated from the Emory University School of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1966.

Professional career

Forrester started his legal career as a Staff attorney for the Callaway for Governor Committee in Georgia from 1966 to 1967. From 1967 to 1969, Forrester entered into private practice work licensed in the State of Georgia before joining the US Attorney's Office as the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia from 1969 to 1976.

Forrester started his Federal judicial career as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia from 1976 to 1981. He was nominated by Ronald Reagan on November 24, 1981, to a seat vacated by Newell Edenfield as Edenfield died while in judicial service.[1] Forrester was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 9, 1981, and received commission on December 10, 1981. Forrester later assumed senior status on April 27, 2004. Forrester was succeeded in this position by William Duffey.
