The Rhode Island Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in Rhode Island.

Jurisdiction

The Superior Courts have jurisdiction over felonies, civil matters where the amount in controversy exceeds $10,000, and in matters of equity. Jurisdiction is concurrent with the District Court on civil matters with amounts in controversy from $5,000-$10,000. Superior Courts may also hears appeals on cases from the District Courts.

Appeals of Superior Court rulings go directly to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.[1]

Districts

The five counties in Rhode Island are divided into four judicial districts:

  • Rhode Island Kent Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Washington Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Newport Judicial District
  • Rhode Island Providence/Bristol Judicial District

The justices of the Superior Court can serve in any of the four districts.

Judges

The Superior Court has a Presiding Justice, 21 Associate Justices and five Magistrate judges. Judges receive office via the merit method.
