The United States District Court for the District of Pennsylvania was one of the original thirteen districts created by the Judiciary Act of 1789.

In 1815, the District of Pennsylvania was divided into two districts, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

In 1901, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania was carved out of the Eastern and Western districts.[1]
