PORTLAND, Maine: The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for Maine against two Maine prison guards, alleging that the guards used excessive force against an inmate.[1] The alleged incident occurred on November 10, 2010, in the Cumberland County Jail. Two prison guards, Glenn MacDonald and Steven Pyle, are accused of brutally beating Wilmer Moreno Recinos, an inmate from El Salvador, without provocation.[2] The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for violations of Recinos’ due process rights, and for assault and battery. MacDonald, who no longer works at the jail, was disciplined after the incident. Pyle was not disciplined. Recinos, who was in the United States illegally, has been deported to El Salvador. The ACLU says Recinos is suffering from long-term physical and emotional problems as a result of the incident.[3]
