Alan Bloch is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.

Early life and education

A native Pennsylvanian, Bloch graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with his bachelor's degree in 1953 and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1958.

Bloch has had a long and distinguished military career serving as a active duty U.S. Army Lieutenant from 1953 to 1955 and in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard from 1955 to 1959 and also served as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1963

Professional career

Bloch spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Pennsylvania from 1958 to 1979.

Judicial career

Western District of Pennsylvania

Bloch was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on August 3, 1979 to a seat vacated by Herbert Sorg as Sorg died while in judicial service[1]. Bloch was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on November 2, 1979. Assumed senior status on April 12, 1997. He was succeeded in this position by Joy Conti.
