Alan Bloch is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Bloch assumed senior status on April 12, 1997.[1]

Early life and education

A native Pennsylvanian, Bloch graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with his bachelor's degree in 1953 and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1958.[1]

Military service

Bloch has had a long and distinguished military career serving as a active duty U.S. Army Lieutenant from 1953 to 1955. From 1955 to 1959, he was a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Bloch was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1963.[1]

Professional career

From 1958 to 1979, Bloch was an attorney in private practice in the State of Pennsylvania.[1]

Judicial career

Western District of Pennsylvania

Bloch was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on August 3, 1979, to a seat vacated by Herbert Sorg. Bloch was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979, on a Senate vote and received commission on November 2, 1979. Bloch assumed senior status on April 12, 1997. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Joy Conti.
