All merit selection system extended for another year in Rhode Island
Rhode Island: Governor Lincoln Chafee signed into law House Bill 686, which is a continuation of Senate Bill 892 of 2007. The bill has been extended annually with House Bill 7829 of 2009 and House Bill 5567 of 2010. The bill allows for merit based selection but also gives the governor a broader range of candidates to chose from. Any person whose name is publicly submitted to the Judicial Nominating Commission and deemed eligible is on the governor's list for the next 5 years to fill vacancies. Judges chosen in this way must still be confirmed by the House and Senate, or just the Senate as required by the state constitution.
