Robert Allan Edgar is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Edgar is a judge serving on senior status.
Early life and education
Edgar graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina with his Bachelor's Degree in 1962 and later graduated from Duke University School of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1965. After law school, Edgar served on active duty in the US Army from 1965 to 1967. [1]
Professional career
Edgar served in Private practice in Chattanooga from 1967 to 1985. Edgar also served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives from 1970 to 1972. [1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Tennessee
On the recommendation of Congressman John Duncan, Sr., Edgar was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on February 26, 1985 to a seat vacated by Herbert Milburn as Milburn went on senior status. Edgar was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 15, 1985 on a Senate Vote and received commission on April 16, 1985. Edgar served as the chief judge of the court from 1998 to 2005 before assuming senior status on October 7, 2005. [1]
