A native of Grand Rapids, MI, Ziegler received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Psychology from Hope College, and a law degree from Marquette University in 1989. While in law school she was a staff editor of the law review, as well as a recipient of the Dean's Award.

Legal Career

She was admitted to the Wisconsin State Bar in 1989. Upon graduation from law school, Justice Ziegler was in private practice at the law firm of O’Neil, Cannon, Hollman & DeJong, SC, where she engaged in civil litigation. She also served as a pro bono special assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County in 1992 and 1996. Before serving in the judiciary, Ziegler worked as a Federal Criminal Prosecutor, and an Assistant United States Attorney, in the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidacy

Ziegler and fellow candidate Linda Clifford won the two berths in the primary voting in February.

The campaign was a contentious one; Clifford contended Ziegler ruled in cases where she was unable to be objective.[1] Ziegler contended Clifford had never been a judge and would be ill-prepared to do so; she also raised concerns about two of Clifford's campaign workers misrepresenting themselves to law enforcement officials.[2]

The seat in question was formerly held by Judge Jon Wilcox (who endorsed Judge Ziegler), who, in 2001, agreed to pay a $10,000 fine for campaign finance violations his campaign accrued in his 1997 Supreme Court re-election bid.[3]

On April 3, 2007, Ziegler defeated Clifford in the election, 58% to Clifford's 42%. [4]
