Augustus Noble Hand (1869-1954) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the Second Circuit in 1928 after an appointment from Calvin Coolidge. He joined the Southern District of New York in 1914 after an appointment from Woodrow Wilson. At the time of appointment, he was a private practice attorney in New York City. He assumed senior status on June 30, 1953 and served in this capacity until his death on October 28, 1954.[1]

Judicial career

Second Circuit

Hand was nominated by President Calvin Coolidge on May 19, 1927 to fill the seat vacated by Charles Merrill Hough. On December 6, 1927, he was nominated. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 18, 1928, and received commission that same day. He assumed senior status on June 30, 1953 and served in this capacity until his death on October 28, 1954.[1]

Southern District of New York

Hand was nominated by President Woodrow Wilson on September 28, 1914 to fill the seat vacated by George Chandler Holt. He was confirmed by the Senate on September 30th, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until June 1, 1927, when he was appointed to the Second Circuit.[1] Hand was succeeded in this position by Frank Joseph Coleman.
