Barry Schaller

Barry R. Schaller has served on the Connecticut Supreme Court since the fall of 2007.
Background
Justice Schaller received his B.A. degree from Yale College in 1960 and his J.D. from the Yale Law School in 1963. He was engaged in the private practice of law with Bronson & Rice, Attorneys, in New Haven, CT from 1963 to 1974. During that period, he served on the Connecticut Board of Pardons from 1971-74 (Chair 1973-74) and on the Connecticut Planning Committee for Criminal Administration. He also served as Co-Counsel to the House Minority Leader during the 1969 session of the General Assembly. He was appointed to the Connecticut trial bench in 1974. After serving for more than eighteen years on the trial bench, he was appointed to the Appellate Court in 1992.
Publications, awards
Justice Schaller, who has taught and lectured widely, regularly teaches courses on law, literature, and jurisprudence to state court judges. He also teaches on the adjunct clinical faculty of the Yale Law School and is an Associate Fellow at Branford College, Yale University. He is a Visiting Lecturer at Wesleyan University and Trinity College, where he teaches courses in Bioethics, Public Health law and ethics, bioterrorism, human research ethics, and the law. He has been a Visiting Lecturer at Yale University and a Guggenheim Fellow at the Yale Law School and an Adjunct Professor at Quinnipiac Law School. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles on a wide variety of legal topics including the law of bioethics, public health law and ethics law and the humanities, constitutional law, complex case management, and the problem of violence in American society. His book, A Vision of American Law: Judging Law, Literature, and the Stories We Tell published in 1997, was selected to receive the 1997 Quinnipiac Law School Book Award for excellence. Justice Schaller has been elected a Charter Life Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation, and a member of the American Law Institute.[1]
