Barton Voigt

Barton R. Voigt (b. 1949) is the Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court, a position to which he was elevated on July 1, 2006. He was appointed to the Supreme Court on March 29, 2001 by Governor Jim Geringer (R). His current eight-year term expires in 2010.
Background
A native of Thermopolis, Wyoming, Justice Voigt earned both a B.A. and M.A. in American History, as well as his J.D., at the University of Wyoming.
Legal career
Justice Voigt practiced law in his home town for ten years, serving as Hot Springs County and Prosecuting Attorney for two terms. After serving two years as a county judge in Gillette, he was a district judge in Douglas County for eight years.[1]
Quiet bombshell in Matthew Shepard case
Justice Barton Voigt dismissed a "homosexual rage" defense, which had been part of the defense team's efforts to have the charges against Aaron McKinney reduced to manslaughter.[2] The jury would find McKinney guilty of felony murder, and he would be sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole.
