Brian Zahra appointed to Michigan Supreme Court
Unsurprisingly, the choice of Zahra maintains the Republican balance on the court. The new justice said, "...he would follow in the legal tradition set by Corrigan, Young and Justice Stephen Markman, one of 'diligently searching for and applying the rule of law, a tradition of respecting the principles of limited government.'" The three justices he named are the other Republicans on the court.
As for Zahra's legal career, he has served as an appellate judge since 1998. During that time, in 2004, he ran for a seat on the Supreme Court. Prior to his position on the Court of Appeals, Zahra was a judge on the Third Circuit Court, starting in 1994. He spent the beginning of his legal career as a law clerk, then went into private practice.
