Carl Barbier is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton.

Early life and education

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Barbier graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1966 and later from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law with his Juris Doctor Degree in 1970.[1]

Professional career

Barbier began his legal career as a Law clerk for former Louisiana State Appeals Judge William Redman in the Fourth Circuit Louisiana Court of Appeals from 1969 to 1970, and then clerked for former federal judge Fred Cassibry in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana from 1970 to 1971. From 1971 to 1998, Barbier was a private practice attorney in the State of Louisiana from 1971 to 1998.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Louisiana

On the recommendation of Senators Mary Landrieu and John Breaux, Barbier was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana by President Bill Clinton on on May 19, 1998, to a seat vacated by Okla Jones. Barbier was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 28, 1998, and received commission on October 1, 1998.[2]

Deepwater Horizon oil spill cases

Judge Barbier presides over many consolidated cases following from the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Barbier was chosen by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on August 10, 2010. Most of the claims are brought by fisherman, rig workers, boat captains, and similar plaintiffs (securities claims brought by BP shareholders were transferred to Houston). [3]
