Cecilia M. Altonaga is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. She joined the court in May 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Prior to appointment, Altonaga was a county judge on the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Altonaga graduated from Florida International University with her bachelor's degree in 1983 and from Yale Law School in New Haven, CT in 1986.[1]

Professional career

Altonaga was a County Attorney for the Miami-Dade County Attorney's Office in 1986. In 1987, Altonaga served as a law clerk for former federal judge Edward Davis in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Altonaga served as Assistant County Attorney in the Miami-Dade County Attorney's Office from 1988 to 1996. From 1996 to 2003, Altonaga was appointed Judge of the County Court for the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida.[1]

Altonaga was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by President George W. Bush on January 15, 2003 to a seat vacated by Shelby Highsmith. Altonaga was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 6, 2003 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 7, 2003.[2]
