Legal education and experience
Judge Cheryl Matthews attended University of Michigan, and earned a BA in 1985. In 1989, she graduated from Fordham University School of Law in New York with a JD.[2]
Legal Experience
Hon. Cheryl A. Matthews was elected to the Oakland County Circuit Court bench in 2004. Prior to that, she served in the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office first as an assistant prosecuting attorney,1991- 1997, then as chief of the Child Sexual Assault Section, 1997- 2004. During that time, Judge Matthews also served as an instructor at the Oakland Police Academy. She served as a board member of the Oakland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council, 1999-2005, and was an appointee to the Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice, 1998-2004.[3]
For the Detroit News Voter Guide, Matthews wrote, "As a full time Oakland County Prosecutor since 1991, I have been responsible for the prosecution of thousands of felony and misdemeanor cases. Since 1997, I have been Chief of the Child Sexual Assault Unit specializing in the prosecution of sexual assaults on children and impaired adults. I supervise an investigator, a social worker and 5 lawyers who prosecute sexual assault cases in circuit court and who prosecute corresponding cases of neglect and delinquency in the family division of the Circuit Court. In addition to child sexual assault cases, I have prosecuted homicides, burglaries, robberies, theft, arsons, drug cases, drunk driving, domestic violence and have conducted over 100 jury trials. Between 1988 - 1991, I practiced corporate law at the New York firm of Chadbourne & Parke where I also handled pro bono divorces and guardian ad litem proceedings. I am admitted to practice in Michigan, New York and the United States Supreme Court."[4]

Memberships
Judge Matthews is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the New York State Bar Association, the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers, and the Women’s Bar Association.
