Reiss earned her Bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and her law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1989. [4]

After her graduation from law school, Judge Reiss served as law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. After that, Reiss was in private practice specializing in several areas including media, land use, business, employment and federal criminal law until her 2004 appointment to the Vermont State judiciary. [4]

Prior to her appointment to the federal bench, Reiss was a judge in the Lamoille District of the Vermont Superior Court, Vermont District Courts, and Vermont Family Courts. She was appointed to the court in 2004 by Governor Jim Douglas. [5]

District of Vermont

President Obama nominated Reiss to the United States District Court for the District of Vermont on October 13, 2009. [6][7] She filled the seat vacated by John Murtha when he assumed senior status and is the first woman to serve the District of Vermont federal court. [8]

Judge Reiss was recommended to President Obama for a seat on the District of Vermont by Senator Patrick Leahy. The Vermont Judicial Nominating Commission vetted eight finalists in the application process, and of them, selected Reiss for recommendation. [5] The whole Senate voted on November 21, 2009, to confirm her to the District of Vermont. [9]
