Christopher F. Droney is a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He joined the court in 2011 after a nomination from Barack Obama. Prior to nomination, he was a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut. He joined the District court in 1997 after a nomination from Bill Clinton.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Droney graduated from College of the Holy Cross with his Bachelor's degree in 1976 and later graduated from University of Connecticut School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1979. [1]

Professional career

Droney began his legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Connecticut from 1979 to 1993 and in addition to his private practice work served as the Deputy Mayor of West Hartford, Connecticut from 1983 to 1985 before being elected Mayor of West Hartford in 1985. In 1993, Droney was nominated by President Bill Clinton as U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut until 1997. [1]

Federal judicial career

Second Circuit

On May 4, 2011 Obama nominated Christopher Droney to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to a seat vacated by Guido Calabresi at his retirement.[2] Obama told the press, “At every step of his career Judge Droney has performed with excellence and unwavering integrity. I am confident he will serve the American people with distinction on the Circuit Court bench.”[3]

He was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary committee on June 22, 2011 and you can find his Committee Questionnaire Available Here and his Questions for the Record Available Here.[4]

He was reported by the committee on July 21, 2011 and was confirmed on November 28, 2011 with a vote of 88-0. [5]

District of Connecticut

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Christopher Dodd and Joe Libermann, Droney was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Bill Clinton on June 5, 1997 to a seat vacated by Alan Nevas. Droney was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 11, 1997 by Senate vote and received commission on September 18, 1997.[6][1] He left the court on November 28, 2011 when he was elevated to the Second Circuit.
