Claude Hilton

Claude Hilton is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Hilton is a judge serving on senior status. She joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

Early life and education

A native of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Hilton graduated from the Ohio State University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1963 and later graduated from American University's Washington College of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1966.

Legal career

Hilton after law school became a Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County from 1967 to 1968 before entering into private practice licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1968 to 1973. In 1974, Hilton later returned to being a prosecutor by being the Lead Commonwealth's attorney for Arlington County from 1974 to 1975 before serving as a Private practice attorney in Virginia and on a part-time basis as a Court Commissioner for the Arlington County Circuit Court from 1976 to 1985.

Federal judicial career

On the recommendation of Virginia U.S. Senator John Warner, Hilton was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 15, 1985 to a new seat created by 98 Stat. 333 which was approved by Congress. Hilton was confirmed by the Senate on July 10, 1985 on a Senate vote and received commission on July 11, 1985. Hilton served as tje chief judge of the court being the court's lead judicial administrative officer serving in conjunction with the Clerk of Court from 1997 to 2004 before later assuming senior status on December 31, 2005.
