The state court system is made up of the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Court of Appeals, the Colorado District Courts and various courts of limited jurisdiction. The only federal district court in Colorado is the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. Candidates are chosen by a nominating commission and, from those candidates, the Governor makes the final appointment. The judges must then face retention elections to keep their seat. Such retention elections are held in even-numbered years during the November general election.
