Confirmation leads to vacancy in Shelby County

Tennessee: Now that John T. Fowlkes has been confirmed to the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, the Tennessee Judicial Nominating Commission has a job to do. It is accepting applications for the vacancy left by Judge Fowlkes on the Shelby County Criminal Court. [1]
Once the nominating commission screens candidates, it will send a list of three nominees to Governor Bill Haslam. After the governor makes the appointment, the new judge will serve until 2016, when Judge Fowlkes' term was set to expire. [2]
In order to qualify for appointment, a candidate must meet the following standards:
- licensed to practice law in Tennessee;
- at least 30 years of age;
- a resident of Tennessee for at least five years; and
- a resident of the 30th Judicial District for at least one year. [1]
