How judges are chosen

Judges are chosen for the court via commission selection followed by a gubernatorial nomination, followed by legislative appointment. They serve eight year terms from their date of appointment.[1] They are retained for subsequent terms through gubernatorial re-nomination and legislative re-appointment.

Mandatory qualifications include:

  • Must be a state resident.
  • Must have been a member of state bar member at least ten years.
  • Mandatory retirement at age 70. [2]
