WAMPSVILLE, New York: The Wampsville courthouse in Madison County could be getting a renovation as soon as this summer. The courthouse plans to make renovations to the courthouse, adding an entrance to the rear of the courthouse which would provide accessibility to handicapped individuals. An elevator would also be installed, providing access to the lower level of the building where individuals will have access to ADA compliant space, a bathroom, meeting room, office space and small courtroom. These renovations were brought on by a 2009 lawsuit. [1]
Three years ago the county was sued because of the inaccessibillity of the Wampsville courthouse. Madison County Resident Paul Brown and Oneida County Resident Vince Rogowski sued the county, claiming the courthouse had violated their rights to be able to enter a public building or have matters heard in a designated courthouse. Rogowski said, “It’s a slap in the face to people with disabilities. It’s saying we don’t want you here.” [1]
