On June 7, 2009 Henry formally announced her intention to run in the statewide election for the seat on the Arkansas Supreme Court. She is planning to run for Tom Glaze's seat, which opened when he retired in 2008, since the term of Elana Cunningham Wills, who was appointed to fulfill the remainder of Glaze's term, is expiring on December 31, 2010. [4]
Henry stated: "While my first responsibility is to perform my duties as a Judge on the State Court of Appeals, I embrace this opportunity to connect with people all across this great state." [5]
The 2010 Arkansas Nonpartisan Judicial Election will be held on May 18, 2010. [6] In addition to Henry, the announced candidates are Judges Karen Baker and John Fogleman. [7]
Political affiliation
When questioned about past political party affiliation, Henry stated: "It's simply not a judge's role to affiliate with a political party". She referred to the 2000 passage of Amendment 80 as evidence that Arkansas voters expect judges to be politically neutral. [7]
Endorsements
In connection with the nonpartisan mandate that is required in Arkansas, Judge Henry has received support from politicians including Republicans such as former Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt, and Democrats like Jimmie Lou Fisher and Senator Mary Anne Salmon.
Legal career
Judge Henry interned for Judge Robert Fussell on the United States bankruptcy court, and "Henry worked for eight years as a lawyer for judges on the Court of Appeals, including Judge Terry Crabtree of Bentonville. Crabtree died in January 2007. Henry ran for Crabtree's vacant seat in May." Henry, a 1997 University of Arkansas School of Law grad, began her appellate clerkship with the Arkansas Court of Appeals immediately following graduation. She worked as an appellate clerk for Judges Frank Arey, Terry Crabtree, and Special Judge Steele Hays. [8]
