The Courts in Iowa consist of the state judicial system and four federal courts.

State courts

Appellate courts

The highest court is the Iowa Supreme Court, to which all cases appeal. The Supreme Court transfers some of these cases to the Iowa Court of Appeals.[1]

Trial courts

There are eight judicial districts in Iowa, which each represent multiple counties and are headed by a chief judge appointed by the Supreme Court. The trial courts are made up of District Judges (who have jurisdiction over their whole district), Magistrates and District associate judges (who preside primarily over County cases), associate juvenile judges, and associate probate judges.[1]

Judicial pay

State judges in Iowa are among the highest paid in the nation. Supreme Court judges are the 14th highest paid, Court of Appeals judges are the 16th highest appellate earners, and District Court judges are the 18th best paid nationwide. "Iowa trial judges earned about $137,700 per year as of June 30, compared with the national average of $134,826, according to the latest annual report published this month by the National Center for State Courts. The median salary for trial court judges nationwide was $130,312." [2]

Federal courts

There are four federal courts in Iowa:

Appeals from these courts are heard in the Eighth Circuit Court.
