Courts in Minnesota consist of the state court system and two federal courts.
State courts
Appellate courts
The Minnesota Supreme Court is the highest state court in Minnesota. The Minnesota Court of Appeals is the intermediate appellate court.[1]
Trial courts
There are District Courts in each of Minnesota's 87 counties. These courts are organized into 10 judicial districts.[2][3] There are also various County Courts.
Other courts
Minnesota has a Problem-Solving Courts program. These courts try to develop a strategy of treatment for an offender and work on a more personal level to help them change their lifestyle. The courts included are the Drug Courts, Mental Health Courts, Truancy Courts, Community Courts, Domestic Violence Courts, and the Teen Court (only in Blue Earth County).[4]
The Minnesota Tax Court is an executive branch court that only hears tax-related cases.[5]
The Minnesota Workers' Compensation Court of Appeals has authority over workers' compensation appeals from the Office of Administrative Hearings and the Workers' Compensation Division at the Department of Labor and Industry.[6]
Federal courts
There are two federal courts in Minnesota: the District of Minnesota and the District of Minnesota Bankruptcy Court[7]
Appeals from these courts are heard in the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals
