Courts in Tennessee consist of the state court system and six federal courts.
State courts
The Tennessee state court system consists of appellate courts, trial courts of general jurisdiction and trial courts of limited jurisdiction.
Appellate courts
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the state's court of last resort. It hears appeals from lower courts and interprets the laws of the state Constitution. The Tennessee Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court. It hears civil case appeals from lower courts. The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals is the other intermediate appellate court in the state; it hears appeals on criminal cases. [1]
Trial courts: general jurisdiction
The 95 counties in Tennessee are divided into 31 judicial districts. Each district has a Circuit Court and a Chancery Court, and some districts also have Criminal Courts. Shelby and Davidson Counties also have Probate Courts.
Trial courts: limited jurisdiction
The courts of limited jurisdiction in Tennessee are General Sessions Court, Juvenile Court and Municipal Court.
Federal courts
There are six federal courts in Tennessee:
- Eastern District of Tennessee
- Middle District of Tennessee
- Western District of Tennessee
- Eastern District of Tennessee Bankruptcy Court
- Middle District of Tennessee Bankruptcy Court
- Western District of Tennessee Bankruptcy Court[2]
Appeals from these courts are heard in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
