The Courts in Washington consist of the state court system and four federal courts.
Appellate Courts
The Supreme Court is the court of last resort in Washington. It hears appeals from the Court of Appeals and administers all the courts.
The Court of Appeals is the state's intermediate appellate court and hears most of the appeals from the lower courts. There are three divisions of the Court of Appeals. [1]
Trial Courts
The Superior Courts are the top trial courts in Washington and they hear civil, felony, domestic relations and juvenile cases. They also hear appeals from the lower courts. There are 29 Superior Court districts in Washington. [1][2]
The District Courts have limited jurisdiction. They can hear misdemeanor cases, civil cases under $50,000, small claims and infractions. There are 49 District Courts. Some of them have multiple locations.[1][3]
There are 127 Municipal Courts in Washington. These courts are established by their respective municipalities and can hear misdemeanor cases and infractions.[1][4]
Federal courts
There are four federal courts in Washington:
- Eastern District of Washington
- Western District of Washington
- Eastern District of Washington Bankruptcy Court
- Western District of Washington Bankruptcy Court[5]
Appeals go to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
