Courts in the District of Columbia include the local level of courts and those in the federal system.

Local courts

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals is the District's court of last resort, or supreme court.

The Superior Court of the District of Columbia is the area's trial court of general jurisdiction. [1]

Federal courts

The federal district court for Washington, D.C. is the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Appeals of that court's decision go to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
