Federal judicial career

Ezra was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii by President Ronald Reagan on November 18, 1987, to a seat vacated by Samuel King. Ezra was confirmed by the Senate on May 19, 1988 and received commission on May 20, 1988. He served as chief judge of the court from 1999-2005. [2][3]

Notable cases

School furloughs

Judge Ezra on October 22, 2009, denied two motions filed by special education teachers against a Hawaii Department of Education order for fourteen furlough days during the 2009-2010 school year.

Attorneys called for the motion claiming that it would put special education students at a disadvantage, however the judge differed and denied the motion on grounds it would not give enough notice for teachers to report back to work.

The lawsuit comes after Hawaii is experiencing a serious fiscal crisis[4].

On November 3, 2009, Judge Ezra will be working on a possible settlement over the teacher furloughs despite he recused himself from a later court date in the case next year[5].
