David Cochran

David Cochran is a citizen member of the Iowa Judicial Nominating Commission which is charged in selecting new supreme court justices amd filling judicial vacancies in the Court of Appeals and Circuit Courts of Iowa.

Background
Cochran is the Associate Professor of Politics and Director of the Archbishop Kucera Centerfor Catholic Intellectual and Spiritual Life at Loras College in Dubuque, a Catholic, Liberal Arts College. Cochran is a well-respected political authority in Iowa academic circles on how politics affects Catholics. Cochran’s primary research interests are in religion and politics, multiculturalism and democracy, and the morality of war. He frequently publishes, lectures, and leads workshops on these and other topics. Also, Cochran has been sought after to speak in front of many organizations in Iowa and across the United States on how politics affects the Catholic Community. Also, Cochran has been a Visiting Scholar in Catholic Thought at Benedictine University in Lisle in 2005. As a Visiting Scholar Cochran spends several days on campus giving two public lectures, visiting classes, and meeting with faculty, staff, and students. He is currently co-writing a book called The Catholic Vote: A Guide for the Perplexed to be published in 2008. In 2006 he was named director of the college’s Archbishop Kucera Center for Catholic Intellectual and Spiritual Life.

Judicial Nominating Commission
In 2007 Cochran was appointed by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and confirmed by the Iowa State Senate to a six year term on the Iowa Judicial Qualifications Commission expiring on April 30, 2013.

Personal
Cochran recieved his bachelor's degree in political science from Drew University in Madison, New Jeresy in 1991. Cochran recieved his master's and doctoral degrees in Political Science and Public Affairs from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1994 and 1996.
