David Gilbertson is Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court. Republican Governor Bill Janklow appointed Justice Gilbertson to the court. His term ends in 2011.
Legal background
Gilbertson attended South Dakota State University, graduating in 1972, and later graduated from the University of South Dakota's School of Law in 1975.
Legal career
Gilbertson established a private practice in Sisseton, South Dakota and simultaneously served as Roberts County Deputy State's Attorney and City Attorney for Sisseton. In 1986, then-Governor Bill Janklow, a Republican, appointed Janklow circuit judge of the state's Fifth Judicial Circuit. Janklow appointed Gilbertson an Associate Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court April 3, 1995. When then-Chief Justice Robert A. Miller retired in 2001, Gilbertson was elected to take his place. As of 2005 Gilbertson is serving his second 4-year term as South Dakota Chief Justice.
