David Gilbertson

David E. Gilbertson (b. October 29, 1949) is Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court. Republican Governor Bill Janklow appointed him to this court on April 3, 1995. He represents the state's 5th Supreme Court district. He was retained by the state's voters in 1998 and 2006. His term ends in 2014. [1] [2]Gilbertson was first elected by his peers on the court to a four-year term as its Chief Justice in 2001. He was then re-elected in 2005 and then again for a third term in June 2009.[3]
Legal background
Gilbertson attended South Dakota State University, graduating in 1972, and later graduated from the University of South Dakota's School of Law in 1975.
Gilbertson established a private practice in Sisseton, South Dakota and simultaneously served as Roberts County Deputy State's Attorney and City Attorney for Sisseton. In 1986, then-Governor Bill Janklow, a Republican, appointed Janklow circuit judge of the state's Fifth Judicial Circuit. Gilbertson joined the Supreme Court in 1995. When then-Chief Justice Robert A. Miller retired in 2001, Gilbertson was elected to take his place. [4]
Memberships and awards
- Gilbertson was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Conference of Chief Justices from 2005-2007.
- He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Center for State Courts in 2006 because of his position on judicial independence.
- He has served as a Court Counselor at South Dakota Boys State since 1995. [4]

Gilbertson is married to Deborah Gilbertson. They have four children. [4]
