David Herndon is the Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Herndon is the court's highest ranking federal judge.

Early life and education

A Missouri native, Herndon graduated from Southern Illnois University-Edwardsville with both his Bachelor's and juris doctoral degrees in 1974 and 1977[1].

Legal career

Herndon was a private practice attorney from 1977 till 1991 before being an Associate Circuit court judge for Illinois third judicial circuit from 1991 to 1998[2].

Federal judicial career

On the recommendation of Senators Paul Simon and Carol Mosley Braun, Herndon was nominated by President Bill Clinton on April 23, 1998,to a seat vacated by William Beatty. Herndon was confirmed by the Senate on October 21, 1998 and received commission on October 22, 1998[3].
