David R. Herndon is the Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton.
Early life and education
Herndon was a private practice attorney from 1977 till 1991 before being an Associate Circuit court judge for the Illinois third judicial circuit from 1991 to 1998.

On the recommendation of Senators Paul Simon and Carol Mosley Braun, Herndon was nominated by President Bill Clinton on April 23, 1998, to a seat vacated by William Beatty. Herndon was confirmed by the Senate on October 21, 1998 and received commission on October 22, 1998.
