David A. Katz is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He is serving on senior status.

Early life and education

An Ohio native, Katz graduated from The Ohio State University with his Bachelor's and Juris Doctor Degrees in 1955 and 1957. [1]

Professional career

After law school, Katz worked the majority of his legal career in private practice in Toledo before being appointed to the Federal Bench in 1994.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Ohio

On the unanimous recommendation of Ohio U.S. Senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum, Katz was nominated by President Bill Clinton on on August 12, 1994 to a seat vacated by Alvin I. Krenzler as Krenzler retired[2]. Katz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 1994 and received commission on October 11, 1994. Katz assumed senior status on January 1, 2005.[1]

Lucas County Jail case

Judge Katz is presiding in the trial of Lucas County Sheriff James Telb and three other correctional officers who are charged in their alleged role of applying a chokehold to an inmate who died in 2004.[3]

Sheriff Telb is facing charges over making false statements to federal investigators and attempting to cover-up a crime. The three other correctional officers are charged with deprivation of rights while acting in their official capacity as correctional officers along with falsifying documents.[3]
