David Nuffer is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Utah. He joined the court in 2012 after an appointment from Barack Obama. Prior to appointment, he was a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Utah. He was appointed a part-time magistrate on May 1, 1995 and a full-time magistrate on January 17, 2003.[1] [2]

Early life and education

Judge Nuffer received his B.A. degree in Humanities from Brigham Young University in 1975 and his J.D. degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1978. During law school, he worked as a law clerk for the firm Howard, Lewis & Peterson.[1]

Professional career

Judge Nuffer began his career in 1977 as a law clerk and attorney with the firm Allen, Thompson & Hughes. He then became a member of the firm Snow, Nuffer, Engstrom, Drake, Wade & Smart in 1979. He worked with this firm through 2002, while also teaching as an adjunct professor at the BYU J. Reuben Clark Law School (2001-Present) and serving as a part-time federal magistrate judge (1995-2002). [1]

Nuffer was appointed a part-time magistrate on May 1, 1995 and a full-time magistrate on January 17, 2003.[1]

District of Utah

On June 29, 2011, Nuffer was nominated to the federal bench by President Barack Obama to the seat vacated by Dale Kimball.[3] Of the appointment, Obama said, “I am honored to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. They have both demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice throughout their careers, and I am confident they will continue to serve the American people with integrity.”[4]

He was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary committee on September 20, 2011 and you can find his Committee Questionnaire Available Here and his Questions for the Record Available Here.[5]

On Thursday, March 22, 2012 David Nuffer was confirmed by the United States Senate to the United States District Court for the District of Utah with a vote of 96-2. [6]
