David Sutherland Nelson (1933-1998) was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Nelson joined the court in 1979 after an appointment from Jimmy Carter. At the time of his appointment, Nelson was a Justice for the Superior Court of Massachusetts. He assumed senior status on September 27, 1991. He served the District of Massachusetts until his death on October 21, 1998. [1]

Nelson was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on January 25, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629; he was confirmed by the Senate on March 21, 1979, and received commission on March 23, 1979. He assumed senior status on September 27, 1991. He served the District of Massachusetts until his death on October 21, 1998. Nelson was succeeded in this position by Reginald Lindsay.[1]
