Deanell Reece Tacha is a Federal Appeals judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

Tacha was the 2007 recipient of the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.

Early life and education

A native Kansan, Tacha graduated from the Kansas with his Bachelor's Degree in 1968 and later graduated from Michigan Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1971.

Legal career

Tacha was a White House fellow as a special assistant to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor from 1971 to 1972 before becoming a private practice licensed in Washington, DC 1973 and in the State of Kansas from 1973 to 1974. Tacha later became Director of the Douglas County Legal Aid Clinic from 1974 to 1977 and also served as a full-time Faculty of Kansas Law from 1974 to 1985. Tacha also served as Commissioner of the Federal Sentencing Commission from 1994 to 1998.

Federal judicial career

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Bob Dole, Tacha was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on October 31, 1985 to a new seat created by 98 Stat. 333 which was approved by Congress. Tacha was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 16, 1985 on a Senate vote and received commission on December 16, 1985. Tacha served as chief judge of the court from 2001 to 2007.
