Deborah Chasanow is an Article III federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. She joined the court in 1993 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Chasanow assumed senior status on October 3, 2014.[1]


Born in Washington, D.C., Chasanow graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in 1970 and later graduated from Stanford Law School with her J.D. degree in 1974.[1]

Professional career

Chasanow started her legal career for Circuit Court Judge David Cahoon in the Montgomery County Circuit Court from 1974 to 1975. Chasanow joined the Maryland Attorney General's Office in 1975 as a Assistant State Attorney General until 1987. From 1979 to 1987, Chasanow served in the Maryland Attorney General's Office as the Chief Prosecutor in the Criminal Appeals Division.[1]

Judicial career

District of Maryland

Chasanow was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland on August 6, 1993, to a seat vacated by Alexander Harvey II. Chasanow was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 18, 1993, and received commission on October 20, 1993.[2] Judge Chasanow served as Chief Judge of the Court from 2010 until 2014. She assumed senior status on October 3, 2014.[1]

Magistrate, District of Maryland

Chasanow began her Federal judicial career in an eight-year term appointment as a Federal Magistrate Judge in 1987. She served as a magistrate judge until being appointed as a federal judge in 1993.[1]
