Donald Beatty

Donald W. Beatty is an Associate Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. South Carolina is one of two states where lawmakers select judges (Virginia is the other). He was elected to the Supreme Court in May of 2007 and will serve until 2017. He is a Democrat.[1]

Background

Justice Beatty is married to Angela Chestnut Beatty and has three children, Brandon, Austine and Morgan. He is a member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church located in Spartanburg, South Carolina where he serves as a trustee. [1]

Legal education

Justice Beatty received his bachelor's degree in 1974 from South Carolina State University. After graduation Beatty served in the military as an army commissioned officer. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1979 from the University of South Carolina School of Law, Columbia, South Carolina. [1]

Legal career

Justice Beatty was in private practice from 1979 until his election to the Circuit Court of the Seventh Judicial Circuit in August 1995. In April, 2003 Beatty was elected to the South Carolina Court of Appeals and served there until receiving his seat on the Supreme Court. [1]
