Dorothy Wright Nelson

Dorothy Wright Nelson is a Federal judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.
Early Life and Education
Born in San Pedro, California, Nelson graduated from University of California with her Bachelor's degree in 1950 and later graduated from University of California Law School with her Juris Doctor degree in 1953. Nelson obtained her Masters of Law degree from the University of Southern California Law School in 1956.[1]
Legal Career
Nelson was a Research Fellow at University of Southern California Law School from 1953 to 1956 while working in private practice from 1954 to 1957. Nelson was a Professor at the University of Southern California Law School from 1957 to 1980, serving its Dean from 1969 to 1980. Nelson has continued to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Southern California since 1980. [1]
Federal Judicial Career
Nelson was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979 to new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Nelson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 19, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on December 20, 1979. Nelson assumed senior status on January 1, 1995.[1]
