Edmond E. Chang is a federal judge serving on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 2010 after an appointment from Barack Obama. Prior to appointment, he was a federal prosecutor in Chicago, Illinois.
Early life and education
Chang earned his B.S.E. in Aerospace Engineering (cum laude) in 1991 from the University of Michigan, and his J.D. (cum laude) in 1994 from Northwestern University School of Law. [1]
Professional career
Change served as law clerk for James Ryan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and for Marvin Aspen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after graduation. In 1996 he became an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University School of Law teaching civil rights litigation, a position that he continues to serve. From 1997 to 1999 Chang was with the law firm Sidley Austin LLP practicing labor and employment litigation. In 1999 he joined the Chicago office of the Northern District of Illinois as an Assistant United States Attorney. Since 2005, he has served as Chief of Appeals for the Criminal Division, and he previously served as Deputy Chief of the General Crimes section. [1]
Judicial career
Northern District of Illinois
On April 21, 2010 Chang was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by President Obama.[2] He is nominated to fill the seat vacated by Elaine Bucklo. [3] Chang was recommended to the President by Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin. [4]
Chang was rated "Unanimously Qualified" by the American Bar Association. [5]
Judiciary Committee hearing
Chang's hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee was on July 14, 2010. [6]
Chang's nomination was reported by committee on August 5, 2010. [7]
Chang was confirmed on December 18, 2010 by a senate voice vote.[8]
