Ellen L. Hollander is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. She joined the court in 2010 after an appointment from Barack Obama.[1] Prior to her appointment, she was a judge at-large on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the intermediate appellate court for the state of Maryland. She took office in 1995[2] and was retained by voters in 1996[3] and 2006.[4] Her current ten-year term ends in 2016.[5]
Early life and education
Judge Hollander was born on May 24, 1949 in New York City. She received her B.A. degree from Goucher College in 1971 and her J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1974.[2]
Professional career
Judge Hollander began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge James Miller of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. She joined the law firm Frank, Bernstein, Conaway & Goldman in 1974 as an associate. In 1979, she left the firm to become an Assistant Attorney General for a short time. She then became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland. She returned to Frank, Bernstein, Conaway & Goldman in 1983 and became a partner in this firm in 1985. She has a been a member of various law clubs and Bar associations throughout her career. She became a Judge on the 6th Appellate Circuit in 1994 and held this position until her appointment to the Court of Appeals.[2][6]
Judicial career
District of Maryland
Judge Hollander was recommended to President Obama for an upcoming vacancy on the United States District Court for the District of Maryland by Democratic Maryland Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin. [7][8] On April 21, 2010 Obama nominated Hollander to the seat vacated by Andre Davis. [9][10]
Hollander was rated "Unanimously Well Qualified" by the American Bar Association. [11]
